Experienced, Compassionate And Tailored Legal Counsel
I am Robert (Bob) Butler. I am a native of the Pacific Northwest region, and I have been an attorney in Bellingham and Whatcom County for more than 25 years. Rather than trying to be a jack-of-all-trades, I have concentrated my practice on criminal defense, employment law and civil rights litigation. This focused approach enables me to deliver high-caliber advice and representation for my clients to confront these issues.
I also limit my caseload so that I give each of my clients and their legal problems the proper attention it deserves. You will work directly with me from start to finish. I have tried and won cases in state and federal courts throughout northwest Washington. I have a 10.0 Avvo rating, and I have been selected to the Super Lawyers list every year since 2013.

My Background
I started in the field of education as a teacher and bring that unique experience to my practice of law. I have a knack for breaking down a legal strategy or concept for my clients in an understandable and simple way. Likewise, I can lay out the case for the jury and/or judge in plain and clear terms. Despite my reputation as a formidable litigator, I am not a stuffy or condescending lawyer. I strive to be relatable and put people at ease so that we can have a frank discussion about their legal situation and how best to proceed.
I graduated in 1983 from the University of Portland with a degree in secondary education. After teaching for a number of years, I attended the Seattle University School of Law (formerly the University of Puget Sound School of Law). I received my law degree in 1992 and began my practice shortly thereafter. I established my own law firm here in Bellingham in 1995 and have been serving the local populace ever since.
My hobbies and interests include spending time with my children, golfing, skiing, traveling and boating, but most of all, being a grandpa!
